Ginger Katya Peak – The Most Accessible Four-Thousander in the Pamirs

For many years, the mountain had no official name at all. Climbers and guides referred to it in different ways: Red Peak, Rusty Peak, or simply "that red mountain." There was never a single agreed-upon name.

Over time, a charming story emerged at the Asia Mountains Base Camp. A few years ago, a young woman named Katya, known for her bright red hair, worked in the camp.

Little by little, guides and staff jokingly began calling the mountain Ginger Katya. The name turned out to be so memorable that it quickly became popular among guides, camp staff, and climbers. Today, most visitors to the Pamirs know the mountain by this name.

Which version of the story is closer to the truth is difficult to say today. One thing is certain: Ginger Katya Peak has become one of the best-loved and most frequently climbed summits in the Lenin Peak region.
