Monument to Yuri Kudashkin

Northern Star Memorial Shelter

In Memory of Yuri Valentinovich Kudashkin

On August 20, at the Northern Star Shelter memorial complex in Ala-Archa, a monument was unveiled in honor of Yuri Kudashkin — a man whose life is forever inscribed in the history of Kyrgyz mountaineering.

Памятник Кудашкину Ю.

Yuri Valentinovich Kudashkin was born in 1951 in the village of At-Bashi, where his father, an agronomist, had been sent to develop agriculture. He first encountered the mountains as a schoolboy: his first hiking trip took place in the eighth grade, led by his geography teacher, Klavdiya Fedoseyevna. She introduced young Yuri to the local youth tourism station, where his passion for orienteering and serious mountain tourism began.

At just 17 years old, in 1968, he earned the USSR Mountaineer Standard, and upon entering the Mining and Geological Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute, he firmly tied his life to professional mountaineering. By the age of 26, he had become a Master of Sport.

By profession, Yuri Kudashkin was a mining engineer; by calling — a mountaineer; and by nature — an artist. From 1968 to 2023, the mountains were his greatest passion and the meaning of his life. He was a member of the mountain rescue service, the head of training at the Ala-Too Mountaineering Camp, and, above all, a mentor to an entire generation of climbers.

His students remember him not only as an outstanding athlete and talented coach but also as a wise friend, always ready to lend support. His humor and optimism helped find a way out of the most difficult situations — both in the mountains and in life.

Beyond mountaineering, Yuri Valentinovich possessed a rare gift as a woodcarving artist. His works still preserve the warmth of his hands and continue to bring joy to people today.

The monument to Yuri Kudashkin is more than a tribute to an exceptional athlete, USSR Master of Sport, and rescuer. It is a symbol of gratitude to a person who left a bright mark in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

Приют Северная Звезда

The Northern Star Shelter Memorial Complex, often called the “Mountaineers’ Cemetery” in the Ala-Archa Gorge, was founded in 1964. During the Soviet era, it was cared for by the mountaineering camp, and later this mission was continued by the Mountaineering Federation of Kyrgyzstan, which established a board of trustees.

It is worth noting that this is the first mountaineering memorial in the CIS to receive official status as a historical and cultural monument.

The complex contains only five burials; for all other climbers, memorial plaques with photographs have been installed. Everything seen here — the fencing, gates, and plaques — was created solely through the enthusiasm and voluntary contributions of mountaineers and their friends.

This place preserves the memory built by the hands of those who truly cherish the mountains — and the people who devoted their lives to them.
