Trekking in the Konorchek Canyons in Kyrgyzstan

Where to go trekking in spring?

There are places where nature seems to reveal the full power of its imagination. Konorchek Canyons are exactly such a place.

Red cliffs, labyrinths of narrow gorges, stone towers and “castles” shaped by wind and water over millions of years create one of the most unusual landscapes of the Tien Shan. In spring this harsh scenery suddenly comes to life: flowers appear among the red clay and sandstone, streams run through the canyons, and the clear mountain air fills with the sounds of birds.

This is a rare moment when Konorchek reveals its full beauty — only for a couple of spring months before the canyons once again sink into the calm heat of summer.

The trekking route takes you through the most impressive corners of this natural labyrinth: from narrow canyons to panoramic viewpoints, from the red cliffs of Boom Gorge to the green alpine meadows of the Shamsi valley.

Why choose a trekking trip to Konorchek Canyons?

  • Konorchek Canyons are one of the most unusual landscapes in Kyrgyzstan. The bizarre shapes of the cliffs resemble ancient castles, towers, and giant natural sculptures — something you truly need to see with your own eyes.
  • Spring is the best time for trekking. The canyons come alive: plants bloom, streams flow, and the air fills with the aromas of steppe herbs. The summer heat has not yet arrived.
  • A real trekking adventure. Multi-day hiking through canyons, mountain passes and valleys with overnight stays in tents.
  • Panoramas of the Tien Shan
From the high points you will see impressive views of canyon labyrinths and mountain ridges.
  • Contrasting landscapes
The route passes from red desert-like canyons to coniferous forests of the Shamsi gorge.
  • Traces of an ancient sea
Millions of years ago this place was the bottom of an ocean — even today you can sometimes find fossilized shells in the mountains.
  • Ascent to Sagyzkhan-Choku Peak (2925 m) with panoramic views of the canyons from above.
  • The trek is suitable even for beginners. Daily hiking distances are manageable for people in good physical shape, averaging 10–14 km per day.

Spring trekking in the Konorchek Canyons is a great opportunity to start the hiking season early. Write to us — we will help you choose the right equipment.
