Issyk-Kul is one of the main natural symbols of Kyrgyzstan. The lake is located in an intermountain basin at an altitude of more than 1,600 meters and is surrounded by the Kungey and Terskey Ala-Too mountain ranges, which create a unique microclimate in the region.

A journey around Lake Issyk-Kul follows one of the most scenic routes in the region. In just a few days you can circle the lake, visiting gorges, canyons, waterfalls, and natural hot springs.

The landscapes change almost daily, allowing travelers to experience the incredible diversity of nature within a single journey.

Issyk-Kul has rare hydrological features — about forty rivers flow into the lake, while none flow out of it. Because of this, the water is slightly salty and remarkably clear.

Lake Issyk-Kul does not freeze even in winter — a rare phenomenon for high-altitude lakes. The deepest point of the lake exceeds 600 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes in the world. The lake is home to Issyk-Kul osman, marinka, and introduced species such as trout, carp, and whitefish.

During the warm season the lake is comfortable for swimming: the water warms up and there are well-equipped beaches for отдыха. Despite the popularity of the resorts, there are still areas without dense development and “wild beaches”.

Every year the city of Cholpon-Ata hosts the international Issyk-Kul Marathon, bringing together athletes from many countries and turning the region into a hub for active travelers.
