Monument to Elvira Shataeva's group
A restoration of the monument dedicated to Elvira Shataeva’s group has been carried out in Achik-Tash.
In August 2025, restoration works began in the Achik-Tash camp on the monument erected in honor of the Soviet women’s mountaineering team led by USSR Master of Sports Elvira Shataeva.Over time, the monument was threatened with collapse: marmots had burrowed under its base, causing the structure to tilt dangerously. During the restoration, a stone foundation was created to reinforce the monument and preserve it for many years to come.

The initiative was warmly supported by many mountaineering camps. Climbers from different teams joined the effort, making this collective support especially meaningful.
It is worth remembering that in 1974, a group of eight Soviet women climbers, led by Elvira Shataeva, successfully reached the summit, but were caught in a hurricane on their descent at an altitude of about 7,000 meters. The entire team perished, and a monument was later erected in Achik-Tash in their memory.

Members of the Shataeva group: Galina Perekhodyuk, Valentina Fateeva, Irina Lyubimtseva, Nina Vasilieva, Tatyana Bardashova, Lyudmila Manzharova, Ilsiyar Mukhamedova, and Elvira Shataeva.
The restoration of the monument is an important step in preserving the memory of the courage and strength of these women, who forever inscribed their names in the history of mountaineering.
