Last Interview
In Memory of Nikolay Totmyanin. On August 11, 2025, we lost Nikolay Totmyanin — our dear friend, an experienced mountain guide, and a man whose name has been closely tied to Asia Mountains for more than two decades of friendship, teamwork, and shared adventures.
Nikolay was more than a guide — he was a true mentor and a bridge between people and the mountains. With him, every ascent became more than just a climb; it was a meaningful journey filled with respect for nature, unity, and the quiet strength of someone who knew how to truly listen to the mountains.
Over the years, Nikolay led hundreds of groups, stood on the summits of the Pamir, Tien Shan, and Himalayas, helped countless people take their first steps in mountaineering, and inspired everyone with his calmness, humor, and reliability.
Despite his age, Nikolay remained a man of motion and dreams. Together we built plans for the future — new expeditions, new routes. He often said he couldn’t imagine life without the mountains. There was always a spark in his eyes — that same spark that makes others want to go further and reach higher.
For us, Nikolay Totmyanin is and will always be part of Asia Mountains. His experience, kindness, and warmth will forever live in the memory of everyone who had the privilege to climb with him, to learn from him on ice and rock, and to share moments of laughter and discovery along the way.
We are sharing the last interview with Nikolay, where he speaks about mountains, life, and people. It is a reminder of a man who lived the way the mountains teach — honestly, with dignity, and with an open heart.
Interview recorded by Boris Kolomensky, participant of the Asia Mountains expedition to Lenin Peak under Nikolay Totmyanin’s guidance.
Rest in peace, Nikolay. You will forever remain in our hearts and memories.
