Trekking on Terskey Ala-Too (Jukuu gorge)

Trekking in Kyrgyzstan

Terskey Ala-Too ridge is located in the northeast part of Kyrgyzstan and closes the hollow of Lake Issyk-Kul from the south. Average height of the ridge is about 4500 m. Terskey Ala-Too ridge is stunning in its variety of landscapes. In one day it is possible to enjoy beauty of red sandstone rocks, wild woods and snow peaks high above the alpine Issyk-Kul Lake. Each gorge is unique in its execution.

Djuuku Gorge is located 75 km from the town of Karakol, to the west of Chon-Kyzyl-Suu gorge. The length of the valley reaches about 55 km. At the bottom of the gorge there are red rocks. Here from the gorge one may see the glaciers and the main summit It-Tash with the height of 4808 m. In the upper part of the gorge there are many waterfalls and alpine lakes (Dzhuukuchak, Djuuku, Chokolyk-Kel, Nijnee, Maloje, Kashka-Suu, and others.) Gorge Djuuku is rich and diverse in wildlife, here you can see herds of ibex, argali, stone martens, deer, ulars and partridges. You may also find some interesting ancient monuments here: rock paintings of VI-I centuries BC, the burial of the ancient Turks, stone sculptures.

Chon Kyzyl Suu gorge. Slopes of the gorge are covered with dense bushes. There are hot mineral springs on the eastern slopes of the gorge. Water temperature of the springs is about 43 degrees. Further in the gorge you may see the Western side of Armstrong peak.  In the upper part of the gorge there are picturesque passes: Ashuu Tor (3900m) that leads to alpine meadows of the Central Tien Shan; 50 let Kirgyzii (4600m), Uliyanovets (4490m), Nadezhda (4450m), Zagadka (4400m) all those passes lead to Kalpakovsky glacier (one of the biggest in Terskey mountains, 13 km).

Jety Ogyz. This picturesque area is famous for its "7 bulls" and "Broken heart" stone complexes. "7 bulls" is a red colored rock, towering the health resort zone and "Broken heart" is a symbol of love, which became a reason for many legends. Legends, in their turn attract not just tourists, but sweethearts from neighboring villages. On the weekends it is possible to see wedding processions, coming here to see symbol of love and take a rest in the open air. The top of Jety-Ogyz gorge is closed by a long wall. There is an Ogyz Bashi summit (5181 m) in the middle of the wall. Often people compare this summit with a beauty of Alps - Ungfrau Mountain.

Altyn Arashan translated as "Golden Spring" because of numerous hot springs located here. The water in springs contains radon and that is why it is used for treatment of neuropathy. The views in gorge are fantastic. At an altitude of 2600 m, there is a health resort in a valley with spruce forest, green meadows and aromatic flowers. Besides hot springs, moraine lakes are also being an attraction in Altyn-Arashan. Ala-Kel Lake is the most popular among them.

Trekking over the Terskei-Ala-Too ridge will definitely astonish you by the beauty of landscapes changing throughout you trip.
