Ethnographic tours

On these tours you will not only see the life of Kyrgyz nomads but be a part of their life. You will get to know how people in Kyrgyzstan cook national dishes, make Kyrgyz national carpets, how they place national houses - yurts and see how different their life is from people that live in towns. We are giving you an opportunity to feel yourself a real nomad: live with the local family on Son-Kul lake for the whole week,  learn local traditions and cuisine with Kyrgyz women, see how the national drink kymyz (mare's milk) is made, take part in erecting yurt (Kyrgyz national round house) and see the production of it.

Come to one of these tours and learn more about Kyrgyz culture, Kyrgyz people and their life!

When you get to the Kyrgyz Land for the first time it seems to you that it is a country that keeps its rites and traditions from the ancient times.  And going outside the capital Bishkek for a few tens of kilometers to the mountain gorges you can meet real nowadays nomads that haven’t changed their way of living for centuries. Their simple daily life has enough room in a Yurt – a felt house that Kyrgyz nomads can set up so artfully and skillfully for a short period of time but at the same time decorate it cherishingly with carpets and colorful laces.  Yurts décor deserves a proper attention.  Yurt is symbolically divided into the areas. In front of the door there is a trunk box where all blankets and valuable items and holiday dishes are kept.   Right side part is a woman area where all things used by women are kept as well as children’s clothes but at the same time the left part belongs to a man where he keeps saddles, bridles, hunting equipment. The middle of a yurt is a dinning room and a bedroom.  A night spent in a yurt changes the perception of time and life itself. Maybe it is because if that yurt has an unusual shape of a dome and maybe because of that the Kyrgyz nomads choose the most beautiful places for their summer stopping sites mainly in mountain valleys and gorges where virgin nature reigns and that is why are filled with primordial energetic.

Day 1. Bishkek
Arrival to Bishkek, meeting at the “Manas” airport, Transfer to “Asia Mountains” hotel. Rest.
Today we will go with you on a city tour. Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan and the biggest city in the country. It’s a distinctive administrative unit and is a town of the Republican Submission. The very first name of it was Pishpek, then it was called Frunze and only in 1991 it finally got the name it has now - Bishkek . Its population is about 1 million people. The town is located on the north of Kyrgyzstan in Chu valley at the foot of Tian-Shan mountains about 40km from Kyrgyz ridge and about 25km from Kazakh border.
Bishkek has many places for you to see. There are some large museums, the most interesting are: the Historical National museum, the Arts museum and the museum of M.V. Frunze. The center of the town is dappled by the show bills of Opera and Ballet Theater, Russian and Kyrgyz theaters, Bishkek Theater of Drama and National Philharmonic of T.Satylganov.
There are many places reminding people of the Soviet Union period of time. The influence of that epoch is mostly felt in the center where you may still see the row of soviet architecture buildings: Philharmonic, Government building, Historical museum, Victory monument. But you will also be able to see the modern samples of Kyrgyz architecture: Manas monument, monument of Courage, the monuments of akyns (Kyrgyz poets), manaschi (Kyrgyz Manas legend tellers) and local rulers of different times. The interesting fact is that Bishkek is the only town in Central Asia that still has the monument of V. I. Lenin on the central square.
Bishkek remembers its history and will definitely tell it to everybody who wants to visit this small but cozy capital. The town is also known to be the most ecological town of the world due to a lot of green parks keeping the shadow and coolness even on the hottest summer day.
Overnight in “Asia Mountains” hotel. (B/L/D)

Day 2. Drive to Bokonbaevo village
In the morning after breakfast we will drive to the village of Bokonbaevo. On the way we will visit the Historical and Archaeological Complex - Burana Tower.
The Burana Tower (minaret) is located on the site of the ancient city, 90 km from the capital - Bishkek. Historians and archaeologists have proved that the settlement was the capital of the Karakhanid Khanate and was called Balasagun. Balasagun was founded in the mid of 10th century and the Burana Tower is now the central monument of the complex.
After the excursion we will stop at the home of local residents for lunch. We will taste national dishes and then continue on through the Boom Gorge into Issyk-Kul valley.
Today we will stop for the night in the village of Bokonbaevo, where we can enjoy dinner and a warm bed. (If we have time in the evening we will visit the felt factory where people produce national carpets and other things of felt). (B/L/D)

Day 3. Whole day in Kyzyl-Tuu village (The village of yurt masters)
What is the ordinary life of the local people, and more specifically how was it many many years ago? That’s what we will see today. People have to earn money and in this village it’s based on yurt production. All families are different and they all make different things for yurt. Some make wooden constructions, some make yurt decorations, yurt cover and many other things that have to be in the Kyrgyz style home.
After seeing how the things for Kyrgyz houses are made we will try to erect the yurt by ourselves with a little help of locals.
Even today all the yurts are built without a single nail as it was many centuries ago. And the truth is - where to find in the vast snow-capped mountains, at least one small piece of metal?
Lunch and dinner at the home of local residents, coming back to Bokonbaevo in the evening for relaxation and sweet sleep. (B/L/D)

Day 4. Kochkorka
In the morning we will enjoy the view of Terskey-Ala-Too ridge and after breakfast will continue our way. We will see the amazing change of landscapes like in kaleidoscope.
We will drive to Kochkorka village where we will have lunch and see the crafts show. You will see how Kyrgyz people make their carpets and will have a chance to visit the handicrafts museum where you may see a big collection of Kyrgyz souvenirs. Dinner and overnight in the house of locals. (B/L/D)

Day 5. Kochkorka – Son-Kul
After breakfast we will be transferred to Son-Kul Lake located on the height of 3016 m above the sea level. This is the best place for shepherds-nomads. If you have ever heard a beautiful legend about the most beautiful lake in the center of Tian-Shan mountains most possible this was the lake Son-Kul. By some sources its name is translated as “the last lake” and it’s not without reason as this is the second biggest lake on the territory of Kyrgyzstan after Issyk-Kul lake. And the name can be treated as an “alpine lake”. Son-Kul is located in a large basin between two ridges Son-Kultau and Moldotau on the height of 3016 m above the sea level in the northern part of Naryn valley. Son-Kul is 29 km long and 18 km wide with the depth about 22 m. Besides it is the second biggest lake it is also the biggest natural reservoir of fresh water in Kyrgyzstan. Its area is 278 sq.km and has a tectonic origin. The only river leaving Son-Kul lake is the Son-Kul river. As the lake is located on an alpine meadow and surrounded by mountain ridges it has its own microclimate. All the valley is covered with green alpine fields (Kyrgyz people name them “jailoo”). That’s why this place was very popular among the shepherds and nomads in all times which is proven by the stone inscriptions and ancient shrines found on the shores of the lake.
Shepherds-nomads bring their cattle to the lake in the summer and live here in yurts with their families.
We will get to Son-Kul lake by noon. Accommodation will be in yurts made for the guests in the traditional way. We will continue our acquaintance with Kyrgyz nomads’ traditions. Dinner. Overnight. (B/L/D)

Day 6. Son-Kul
This day we will spend on the lake. If you wish you may get acquainted with local shepherds and find out unique stories of the families, ask how they live and get more information about their traditions.
Lunch, dinner and overnight in the yurt. (B/L/D)

Day 7. Son-Kul - Suusamyr valley (Kyzyl-Oi village)
We will leave Son-Kul and go to Suusamyr valley.  At first stopping at Djumgal valley which is about the same size as Suusamyr valley but much drier. Mountain slopes surrounding the valley are almost snowless. The river Djumgal counts only on subterranean waters and that’s why it’s a wide hollow river which may be forded in many places. Djumgal river flows into Kekemeren which is being the culmination of our day. We will stay in Kyzyl-Oi village for the night and will enjoy the view of one of the most beautiful rivers in Kyrgyzstan.
Kekemeren means the “Blue flow”. It flows through the canyon with steep walls of the 500 meters height then goes into the valley and further into the canyon again… It comes to Naryn river going first through Kavak ridge being a big turbulent and high-water river deep curved into the bottom of the valley. It gives its cold waters to Naryn cooling the river for over a degree. (B/L/D)

Day 8. Coming back to Bishkek
We continue our way and soon will dive to the main Kyrgyz road going from Bishkek to Osh and come into the green wide valley (steppe). The mountains surrounding it gave the valley so much space that for a moment one may forget being in the harsh mountain country. Here you may see many nomads who brought their yurts for the summer time. On the green grass canvas all these yurts look like white minarets.
Here we will have our lunch and go back to Bishkek. Arriving to the capital. Rest, farewell dinner. (B/L/D)

From early centuries woman kept fire in the house and raised children while man was searching for food. Today these notions have undergone huge transformations. In Europe for example the rights are equal from long ago, but in such country as Kyrgyzstan this kind of tradition is still alive. Men work and earn money and women stay home and raise kids, cook, clean, do laundry and usual house work.

But don’t think that their life is boring as they have time to see how their kids are growing from day to day, they bring calmness and warmth into the life of the whole family and they have time for their hobby when they sit and do crocheting, embroidering, spinning, making woolen toys, slippers, carpets, coasters and other useful things for their home.

In this tour we would like to present you the life of usual Kyrgyz women and their crafts. You will be able to go to local bazaars, cook national dishes, make woolen things, learn how to spin and many other things.

Life at the SONG-KUL LAKE.

The Song-Kul Lake is situated in the heart of the Inner Tien-Shan 90 km to the west of Naryn Town. The hollow that is 57 km long and  29 km wide is located inside massive  mountain ranges.  In the center of this hollow is spread the second largest lake of Kyrgyzstan – Song-Kul.  Its length is 29 km and its width is 17 km. Its surface is located at the altitude of 3013 m above the sea level, the square of the surface is 270 km, maximum depth is 13.2 m. The lake is of tectonic origin filled with fresh water.

Eighty brooks flow into the lake but only one river- the Song-Kul River flows out of the lake. Only four rivers have permanent flow into the lake: Kum-Bel,  Ak-Tash, Tash-Tebe and Kara-Keche.  The coast line is variable. North-west part is cut by rocky bays, but the rest part has sloping shores with swampy  spots. In the valley of the Song-Kul River there are many thermokarst craters that have been formed as a result   of melting of permafrost located at the depth of 1.5 m. 4 km away from the water source the water stream is hiding to the rocky gorge as a cascade waterfalls – Kek Jerty.  The lake freezes up in the second half of October and ice begins to break up on the lake at the end of April.  In some years the ice can be 1 m thick.

Animal life is very variable.  Different kinds of ducks, seagulls, herons, and other kinds of waterfowl nest there in summer (66 species). Due to severe climate there was no fish in the lake before 1959. At present time osman, peled, cisco  has been  introduced into the lake.

Day 1. Bishkek

Arrival to Bishkek, meeting at the “Manas” airport, Transfer to Bishkek.

Day 2. Bishkek – Kochkorka – Son-Kul

In the morning we will continue our way. We will see the amazing change of landscapes like in kaleidoscope. We will drive to Kochkorka village where we will have lunch and see the crafts show. You will see how Kyrgyz people make their carpets and will have a chance to visit the handicrafts museum where you may even buy some souvenirs for your relatives and friends. After that we will be transferred to an amazing mountain lake Son-Kul which is opened only in summer as all the roads and the lake itself is covered with snow for the rest of the year. Dinner and overnight in local yurts.

Days 3 – 8. Son-Kul

The day promises to be saturated. Kyrgyzstan is a country of traditions. Each tradition and ritual has been practiced while the Kyrgyz lived in yurts, and had a nomadic way of life. Kyrgyzstan is now developing in many fields and traditions, rituals are not practiced as often as before. This tour is a good opportunity for every guest to plunge at a time when the Kyrgyz lived in yurts, and had a nomadic lifestyle.

Traditional games, riding on horses and camels are offered to guests. Craftsmen will show their works - toshoks, shirdaks and other felt products and will share their experiences, as well as demonstrate the process of sewing. You can enjoy traditional dishes such as rice, Besh Barmak, kuurdak and drink mare's milk, as well as learn about the process of their preparation.

One week at Son-Kul lake. You will dip into the life of real Nomads. You will be able to see how they live and what they do. You will be able to go with the herds, cook Kyrgyz national dishes, live like Kyrgyz people lived many centuries ago. You will be an absolute nomad.

Son-Kul is located on the height of 3013 m above the sea level, as the lake is so high situated it is covered with ice almost the whole year, only in summer one may enjoy its beauty, get acquainted with the life of modern nomads, live in Kyrgyz yurts and try the national cuisine of these hospitable people. Only in summer they come to Son-Kul jailoo (Kyrgyz pastures), paying tribute to their ancestors, Kyrgyz nomads which were used to moving from one place to another  going up to the mountains with all their cattle in summer and going down to the valley in winter.

On the shores and on surrounding hills there is a great amount of different kinds of grass, some of them are considered to be curative. But what is really amazing is that there are fields of edelweiss, with their form and structure it seems as if the stars are not there over you but here under your feet and you finally can not only reach them but also pick one up for the person you love.

All modern nomads are as a rule shepherds. They go up to the mountains to pasture their cattle but in cold times come down back to the valley. If you ask nomads – shepherds if they are satisfied with their nomad’s life you will always get a philosophical saying as an answer “A man must move because the sun, the moon, stars, animals and fishes move and only the earth and died creatures stay where they have been”.

Early breakfast. Ascent onto the top of a small mountain from where you will be able to see the great view of the whole gorge. Djeti-Oguz gorge translated from Kyrgyz as “Seven Bulls” which got this name not without reason. The red rock mountain ensemble that rises above the resort is called “Seven Bulls” and really looks like it. The rocky ensemble of the name “Broken Heart” has many legends and stories and very popular not only among tourists but also among the local beloved couples living in the villages not far from here.  On Fridays, Saturdays  and Sundays you may see the wedding corteges coming here to pay the tribute for the symbol of love and have rest in nature. The very top part of the gorge is enclosed by a vertical rocky wall. In the middle part of it there is an amazing double summit Oguz-Bashi (The head of a bull), having the height of 5181 m. Some people compare this summit with the beauty of Swiss Alps – Jungfrau Mountain.

Today we will definitely see all the rocky complex of “Seven bulls”, will have a walk along the picturesque gorge and if the weather gives us a sunny day we will see the summit Oguz-Bashi. Here will be our first chance to meet real Kyrgyz nomads. If you wish you may ride horses and try Kyrgyz national drink “Kumys” (mare’s milk).

Lunch. And we continue our tour around Kyrgyzstan. The road we take goes along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul lake. You will see a great difference between the northern and southern shores. Southern shore of the lake is more various in the landscape but less crowded. The shore is open and you may stop at the beach, have a walk by the white sand and see the eolian castles’ labyrinths called “Fairy Tale”. Our trip after all this goes to Kochkorka village where we will stay in a guest house. We will get acquainted with the modern Kyrgyz people’s way of life and will visit ethnographic museum where there is a great collection of Kyrgyz nomads’ houseware. Dinner.

Day 4. Kochkorka – Son-Kul lake

By some sources the its name is translated as “the last lake” and it’s not without reason as this is the second biggest lake on the territory of Kyrgyzstan after Issyk-Kul lake. That’s why this place was very popular among the shepherds and nomads in all times which is proven by the stone inscriptionsand ancient shrines found on the shores of the lake. Shepherds-nomads bring their cattle to the lake in the summer and live here in yurts (traditional Kyrgyz houses, used by nomads from early times) with their families.

We will get to Son-Kul lake by noon. Accommodation will be in yurts made for the guests in the traditional way. We will continue our acquaintance with Kyrgyz nomads’ traditions. Dinner.

Day 5. Son-Kul lake

This day we will spend on the lake. In the morning we will ascent to a small hill from where there is a great view of the lake and the whole surrounding valley. Not far from here there are stone inscriptions that are dated by 2-3 mil. BC. If you wish local shepherds may organize a horseback riding for you.

After lunch we will have a walk to the big boulders placed in a form of a circle and spread in a line from North to South. This place is covered by some kind of secret and has many legends. People claim that this was the settlement of the legendary hero Manas and that the rock circles were used as the hearth for making food. Modern ufologists think that this is the spaceport for UFO. Historians call it an ancient calendar.

Coming back to the camp. Dinner.

Day 6. Son-Kul lake – Suusamyr valley and Bishkek

As much as we would like to stay on Son-Kul lake but we have a lot of interesting things in front of us and the last day of our trip should be replete. At first we will leave the lake and go down the road through Kara-Keche gorge to get acquainted with the picturesque landscapes of Kekemeren river and Suusamyr valley. Kekemeren river originates from the merger of Suusamyr and Western Karakol rivers, it flows through the narrow valley and then flows into Naryn river. The bank of Kekemeren is very diverse, somewhere it is the field thickly overgrown with bushes, somewhere it can be a colored sand scree. We will finally come into Suusamyr valley. A little walk in Suusamyr and then the road back to Bishkek is waiting for us. We will have to ascent Tua-Ashuu pass and go through the mountain tunnel after which we will finally get to Chu valley.
